About Me

Hi, I’m Katie, a potter based in Berkshire, UK.

Katie L Thompson Designs began in 2015 with a range of handmade cards and textiles, but my love for pottery started unexpectedly in 2017 when my mum gifted me a pottery class for my 21st birthday. At first, I wasn’t sure I liked the idea—getting covered in clay and socialising didn’t sound appealing! But I found myself hooked and, before long, I had bought my own wheel and set up a home studio where I could spend every spare moment practicing. Pottery quickly became an escape from my workday routine as an accountant, allowing me to recharge and reconnect with a slower, hands-on creative process.

My Inspiration

I’ve always been drawn to creative pursuits. Growing up, I tried my hand at drawing, sewing, lace making, basket weaving, enamelling, and countless other crafts, each one shaping my artistic journey.

Crafting ceramics is my way of finding balance. When I’m at the wheel, I focus on creating pieces that are both functional and beautiful. My small garden studio, nestled in the Berkshire countryside, is where I immerse myself in the creative process. I want each of my pieces to bring a sense of calm and warmth to everyday moments.

My Process

I work primarily with stoneware, handcrafting each piece on the wheel, then glazing and firing at high temperatures to create durable, tactile ceramics. There’s something special about using handmade items, and I hope each piece brings a mindful moment to the day, whether it’s choosing a mug, feeling the form, or admiring the colours and textures in the glaze.

A Little About Me

Aside from ceramics, you’ll often find me out walking with my rescue terrier. Clay is always full of surprises—just when you think you’ve mastered it, there’s a new challenge: a glaze flaw, a kiln quirk, an unexpected twist. But that’s part of the thrill; I wouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you for being here, and I hope my ceramics bring a bit of warmth and joy into your home. Feel free to browse my collection and follow along as I continue this creative journey—there’s always something new taking shape in the studio!
